Contaminant Descriptions (eg CO2/H2S)

Drilling, Exploration & Appraisal

During exploration and appraisal activities, monitoring key contaminants like H₂S, CO₂, and Hg is crucial for safety and commercial evaluation. ScanWell’s ATEX Zone 2-rated online gas analyzers, utilizing TDLAS and Raman Spectroscopy, provide real-time contaminant trending with high-frequency data (up to 1Hz), offering greater accuracy and reducing the need for traditional batch analysis methods like gas chromatography. This approach ensures improved safety, operational efficiency, and reduced personnel requirements.

Real-Time Contaminant and Hydrocarbon Monitoring for Exploration and Appraisal

When conducting exploration and appraisal activities, key parameters that are generally required onsite is the compositional analysis of produced gas. Whilst this is normally conducted via a mud logger, when drilling and performing DST operations in single or multi zonal wells, gas composition to C6+ is a general requirement for onsite hydrocarbon indication and compositional gradient determination. The C6+ fraction can also be useful for monitoring and ensuring separator efficiency during DST testing. In addition, key contaminants such as H2S, Hg and CO2 are appraised as these have a high impact on the commercial evaluation of the field, along with key safety aspects. Traditionally these measurements would be done via batch analysis with a GC, and stain tubes, however the increased data points and representativeness of online systems offer key benefits and reduced personnel requirements.

With modern analytical techniques focusing on TDLAS & Raman Spectroscopy, ScanWell’s ATEX Zone 2 rated online suite of gas stream analyzers  bring extensive benefits to hydrocarbon compositional & contaminant  trending during exploration and  appraisal activities, allowing operators the benefits of traditional onsite measurements without the logistical challenges associated with support gases required for legacy equipment such as Gas Chromatographs, with increased data confidence. Additionally, the SCADA capabilities and sample frequency trending of upto 1hz allows far more representative data to be gathered and digitally logged, whilst reducing operational footprint and personnel requirements. Current systems include C1-C6+, CO2, N2, H2S and H2 to be evaluated and monitored in realtime during DST’s.
