It’s often touted as a key player in transitioning to a low-carbon economy. Helium, on the other hand, is crucial in energy-related applications such as cooling in nuclear reactors and as a carrier gas in various scientific and industrial processes due to its inertness and thermal conductivity. These components are traditionally not quantified in the exploration and appraisal stage until recent years; thus operators are now relooking at mature gas fields to map Hydrogen and Helium levels to better determine economic viability from a new macro-economic perspective. Fields that may no longer be economically viable from a traditional hydrocarbon sense, may be viable due to elevated levels of previously unquantified Hydrogen or Helium.
